My favorite book of 2010 so far. Picked
this up from Banner of Truth during their July sale based on
Spurgeon's recommendation, "Sibbes never wastes the student's time,
he scatters pearls and diamonds with both hands." Certainly true for
this composition.
Based on Isaiah 42:1-3, applied to the
office and ministry of Christ (Matt. 12:18-20), the words in this
book are some of the most encouraging and edifying I have ever read.
Starting with the good effects of bruising by stating after
conversion, we need 'bruising so that reeds know themselves as reeds
and not oaks'.
Ch. 2 declares that 'Christ will not
only not break the bruised reed, but cherish those with whom he
deals'. Sibbes encourages all believers to 'conceal not your wounds,
open all before Him'. This will produce in us a 'holy despair' which
becomes the true ground of hope'.
The ministry of the Lord to the smoking
flax with help for all who are weak (Ch. 4-7). This section is such
a great read of hope and confidence of all who struggle in the walk
of holiness before the Lord.
The tempo of Sibbe's exposition peaks
at Ch. 13, "Grace Shall Reign". I personally loved from this section
the evidences that Christ's rule in us - great comfort found in the
gripping words.
A must read for all needing a touch of
warmth, hope, encouragement, and joy. Definitely a life impacting
book!
